Little Boat on the PrairieIn 1989 Robert Sunderland, a B pressure welder by trade, and Brian Greenway, a master carpenter, began building GREENSUN... a 44 foot, steel hull, ocean going sailboat from plans supplied by naval architect Bruce Roberts. GREENSUN was constructed near Lloydminster, Saskatchewan in the middle of the Canadian prairies. She was then hauled to Vancouver BC and launched in 1994. Final completion and sea trials lasted another six months.
In the fall of 1995 Robert, his wife Dorinda and Brian set sail heading south along the Pacific coast on the first leg of their journey.
After they reached San Diego Brian sold his share of GREENSUN to Robert and Dorinda and bought a smaller sailboat so he could continue his travels independently.
The Sunderlands continued southward on the adventure that was to last 5 years.
